Three new plays for young audiences debut at the Provincetown Playhouse in June. The FREE staged readings, produced by New Plays for Young Audiences and supported by the educational theatre program at NYU Steinhardt, expose kids and teens to new works in development.
The chance to see a theatrical show in development before it becomes a big hit is one of those “only in New York experiences,” that can reaffirm one’s decision to raise kids in NYC. Since 1998, New Plays for Young Audiences has nurtured works for children, youth and family audiences and opened its doors to young theater goers interested in learning how a play or musical goes from the page to the stage. Some of the works, staged as rehearsed readings, have been written by NYU students; others are by noted authors Lowis Lowry, Laurie Brooks and Kevin Wilmott, whose adaptation of the young adult novel,The Watsons Go To Birmingham, is still presented regularly by youth theater companies.
The play development series will return to the Provincetown Playhouse in June. Blast Off! got word this week that tickets for staged readings of The Time Machine, a musical based on the book by Pauline David-Sax, are going quickly. The adaptation, penned by David-Sax and composed Kristine Jieun Lee, follows the journey of a girl named Bailey who builds a time machine not to visit Ancient Egypt or King Arthur’s Court, but to travel back to last Tuesday to repair a friendship. The readings, June 13&14, are recommended for ages 6-10. Tickets are FREE and can be reserved here.
The series of new works also features Black River by Brooklyn-based Afro-surrealist writer Nathan Yungerberg, June 6&7 for ages 9-14 and Camp Cattywampus, a full-length play for teenage audiences, June 20&21. The rehearsed readings are at Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. The Provincetown Playhouse is locate at 133 MacDougal St., in Greenwich Village.
