Blast Off! Origin Story
Many years ago I compiled and edited the events calendar of a local parenting magazine. In Quark. The job was a blast. I got to go all over New York City, sometimes on my own, sometimes with my boys. We learned about jazz from Wynton Marsalis, played vintage video games at the Museum of the American Moving Image, and spent some memorable June evenings at Sunset Singing Circles with Terre Roche. I also once toured a puppet lending library inside the arch at Grand Army Plaza, but that’s a story for another day.
One of my boys, now in his twenties, suggested I pick it up again. He told me about a colleague with a young child who was overwhelmed by the amount of content posted and pushed out by online parenting sites. Specifically, this dad told my son, “In a perfect world, someone would send me the 10-20 coolest New York things to do with kids.”
That someone turned out to be me. Blast Off! was created and shared with a small group of area parents. My aim is to build an informative, useful resource the exhausted parent can trust. I’ll vet all the worthwhile stuff to do with kids, so you don’t have to.
