
We’re heading into peak maple sugaring season when the tap starts to run as daytime temperatures rise and the nights remain cold. Lately, I’ve been bumping into more and more maple sugaring events on the internet, which the librarian in me needed to organize. So here you go — 12 different family-oriented maple sugaring experiences for the remainder of February and in March.
NEW YORK CITY
Two dates remain for Maple Syrup Saturdays, February 21 & 28 at Clay Pit Pond State Park Preserve on Staten Island. Visitors can opt to make a one-mile hike into the woods to see a demonstration of tapping and the collection of sap, which will be followed by an indoor presentation. The all-ages event is FREE. Another way to explore the age old practice of tree tapping without leaving New York City is Tapped Traditions: Maple Syrup and Native American Heritage at the Queens County Farm Museum on Saturday, March 7. The workshop delves into the cultural and historical significance of maple syrup in Native American traditions and includes hands-on demonstrations, storytelling and tastings. 10am-noon. All ages. WESTCHESTER
You can take Metro North to get to the Lenoir Park Preserve Nature Center in Yonkers for the final Family Maple Tapping, a 30-minute program to see how maple trees are tapped on the preserve, Saturday, February 21, 10am-3pm. Cost: $10 per person plus service fee. Visit eventbrite.com to reserve tickets.
Also at the Yonkers preserve, Maple Saturday on Saturday, March 7, for demonstrations, tasting, community tables and an optional pancake lunch. Noon-2pm. All ages. Lenoir Park Preserve is approximately a one mile walk uphill from the station.
The Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale will host a Maple Sugaring Party on Sunday, March 1. Watch evaporation demos at the nature center’s Sugar Shack and learn how maple syrup is made. Visitors can explore the property for storytelling, crafts and sample tastings of sweet snacks. 10am-3pm. Tickets: $15. Purchase tickets in advance at naturecenterbg.org.
Space is very limited for Sugaring Saturday on March 7 at the Teatown Lake Reservation in Yorktown Heights. During the one hour session, learn about the sugaring process along with Lenape legends about the origins of the tradition. Two sessions will be offered at 10 and 11 am. Tickets: $15 per family, up to five members in a family. Reserve tickets in advance at teatown.org.
Public Maple Sugaring is every Saturday in March (3/7, 3/14, 3/21 and 3/28) at Westmoreland Sanctuary, the nature center and wildlife preserve in Mount Kisco. 1-2:30pm. Fee: $10 per person, FREE for children 2 and under. For further information, visit westmorelandsanctuary.org.
Muscoot Farm is a dairy farm turned county park for agriculture, history and wildlife in Katonah. Stop by anytime on Saturday, February 28 at the Sugar Shack to learn how maple syrup is made. Hike to see the maple trees at the Rockefeller State Preserve in Pleasantville and get an up close look at sugaring tools and techniques. The Maple Sugaring Family Workshop is on Saturday, March 14, 1-3pm. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Cost: $4 child, adults admitted FREE. Parkin gat the Preserve is $6. NEW JERSEY
Sap to Syrup runs every Sunday through March 15 at Tenafly Nature Center, a quick trip from the George Washington Bridge. Families will head outdoors to identify tree species, learn how sap flows, and practice using real tapping tools. Dress for the weather. Sunday sessions are at 11:30am & 1pm. Tickets: $12 per person. The Annual Maple Sugar Festival at the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township will be held on Saturday, March 7. The festival features guided walks on the history of maple sugaring, sap cooking demos and more. Noon-4pm. All ages. Tickets: $5 per person. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required. The seasonal Public Maple Sugaring programs will take place on Sunday, February 22, Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1 & 8 at the New Weis Center for Education, Arts & Recreation in Ringwood. The 90-minute program includes learning how to ID Sugar Maples in winter, tree tapping, collection and seeing how the evaporator converts sap to syrup. Tickets: $20 per person, plus service fee. ORANGE COUNTY
Maple sugaring time at the Hudson Highlands Nature Center means Maple Sugar Tours, held Saturdays and Sundays through March 15. Choose from the Sugar Bush Tour (11am, 1&2pm), which includes a one mile moderate hike to the Sugar Bush Shack, or the Maple Lane Tour (noon) geared to very young children and strollers.
