
It’s time to lace up your skates (or rent a pair) and hit one these ice rinks in New York City.
MANHATTAN
The summer swimming pool is now an ice rink. The newly opened Gottesman Rink at the Davis Center in north Central Park offers more affordable options than its cousin on Central Park South, presumably less crowds, and the iconic back drop of Harlem Meer. Open seven days a week and holidays (including Christmas if you’re looking for something to do) Community Skate sessions range from one to two hours and can be booked in advance. General admission for peak hours: $10 adults, $5 children ages 4-16, children 3 and under admitted FREE. During off-peak hours, adult admission is $5. Skate rentals are $10. Drop-in sessions are still available for a Learn to Skate “My Tot & Me” for children ages 2-5 and an adult. Visit daviscenter.centralparknyc.org to learn more.
Welp. It’s prime hours through January 3 for a prime location: beautiful Wollman Rink near the south entrance of Central Park. (Peak hours during non-holiday periods are Friday-Sunday and off peak hours are generally on weekdays). Adult tickets are $40 prime, $28 peak and $16 off peak; Seniors and children ages 4-12 are $11 prime, peak and off-peak; children under 3 are admitted FREE. Skate rentals are $12. Extended holiday hours are 9:00am-10:00pm, December 20-January 1. Purchase timed tickets in advance.
Riverbank State Park Ice Rink offers an expansive outdoor rink with covered roof and the Hudson River and a view of the George Washington Bridge. Public sessions are Fridays, 6:00-9:00pm, Saturdays and Sundays, 1:00-4:00pm and 6:00-9:00pm. Extended hours are available on holidays. Admission is a very reasonable $5 adults, $3 children under 12. BROOKLYN
Skate underneath the Brooklyn Bridge at Roebling Rink at Brooklyn Bridge Park which has a shorter season than most, through February 1. Open daily, sessions are two hours with 60 minutes of skate time starting from when you check in at the ticket booth. Admission is $16 including fees and tax. A limited number of FREE tickets are available to NYC residents for sessions one to three, Mondays-Thursdays, and sessions two to four on Fridays, on a first-come, first-serve walk up basis. Skate rentals are $8. Purchase timed tickets in advance.
LeFrak Center at Lakeside may be under new management, but is still open daily with a choice of rinks, open-air and covered, overlooking Prospect Park Lake. Hours for the Open Air Rink is 9:00am-6:00pm daily, and 7:00pm-10:00pm, Friday and Saturday. The Covered Rink is open Monday-Thursday, 1:30pm-5:45pm, Friday, 1:30pm-5:15pm and 6:30pm-8:50pm, Saturday and Sunday, noon-4:45pm and 8:00pm-9:50pm. General admissions is $10 weekdays, $15 evenings, weekends and holidays. Monday special is $5 admission all day. Skate rentals are $10. The LeFrak Center is located near the Lincoln Road and Parkside/Ocean Avenue entrances to the park. Reserve tickets in advance.
QUEENS
If you’d rather be indoors, check out the expansive World Ice Arena Skating Rink in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Public skating sessions are offered seven days a week: Monday-Thursday,10:30am-5:15pm, Friday, 9:00am-5:15pm and 7:00pm-9:50pm, Saturday, Noon-4:45pm, and 8:00pm-9:50pm, and Sunday, Noon-4:45pm. General admission is $8 weekdays and $12 weekends and holidays. Senior admission is $6 on weekdays only. Skate rentals are $7. Learn more at worldice.com.
Also indoors is Space Glide at the New York Hall of Science, a limited time family-friendly ice rink open through February 22. Note: the rink does not require ice skates. Visitors use museum provided booties to slide along a polymer-based substance called “glice.” Access to Space Glide is included with general admission of $22 adults, $19 children, students and seniors. Open Wednesday-Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. The museum is open for the holidays, December 26-31 and Friday, January 2. NYSCI is located at 47-01 111th St., Corona. DAY TRIP
Thinking about a day trip? Bear Mountain Ice Rink is a nice-sized outdoor rink set amidst the gorgeous mountain scenery of Bear Mountain State Park. Stop by the Hikers Cafe, inside the historic Bear Mountain Inn, for hot cocoa and snacks. Public sessions (weather permitting) are in 90-minute blocks, Friday through Sunday. December 26-January 3, 90-minute sessions start at 10:00am, noon, 2:00pm, 4:00pm, 6:00pm and 8:00pm. (Last session is at 4:00pm on Dec. 31). Admission is $5 general, children under 4 admitted FREE.
