
History lives in plain sight all around New York City. Case in point: Highbridge Water Tower, the 200-foot landmark that defines the northern Manhattan skyline, yet remains a mystery to most New Yorkers.
Thanks to a restoration completed in 2021, you can explore Historic New York: Highbridge Water Tower with the Urban Park Rangers on various dates throughout the year. You’ll learn the basics, (built in 1872, Highbridge Water Tower was part of the Old Croton Aqueduct and provided water pressure for a growing neighborhood) plus, the rangers are extremely knowledgable and can provide answers to the many questions kids are bound to have. Climb the seven stories to the top of the tower and you will be rewarded with panoramic views of New York City. Highbridge Tower is located at Amsterdam Avenue and West 174th Street, Highbridge Park, Washington Heights. Reservations are not required. Check for upcoming dates at nycgovparks.org.
